How Many Lumens Do I Need to Light Up a Sports Field?
Our largest LED Sports Field Lighting produces 168,000 lumens. This is more than enough to easily replace a 2000 Watt Metal Halide light. A Free Sports Field Lighting Plan will determine the right fixture and lumens required to meet your needs.

How High Do I Need to Install Sports Field Lighting to get the best results?
We have found poles used for schools, recreational, and community sports fields range from 30 to 60 feet in height. For college and pro sports facilities, pole height can be as high as 100 feet.
Based on experience, we’ve learned that it is easier for lighting sports fields with a taller pole than a shorter pole using led sports lighting.
What Are the Most Common LED Outdoor Sports Field Lights Used?
You’ll find LED Sports Field Lighting used in many sports and athletic facility locations. These include baseball, softball, and football fields. LED athletic field lighting is a type of powerful LED Sports Flood lighting that include wide and narrow range optic packages. They are high-wattage and high-lumen fixtures that come with a set of low-beam optics.

What Are the Main Benefits of using LED Lights in Sports and Athletic Fields?
The main type of fixture that LED Sports Lights replace is metal halide fixtures. LED Lights are significantly more energy efficient and can reduce your lighting bills by 50-75%. LED Lights turn on and off instantly, and require little, if any, maintenance.
You can expect 10-20 years of life from a LED outdoor field lighting. LED Lights in general have relatively long lives, and sports fields typically are not locations where the lights are on all the time.
Metal halide bulbs expected lifespan is around 15000 hours. At 1/2 life or 7500 hours, they will suffer about 50% lumen loss. While the lights still turn on, they are only 1/2 as bright as a brand-new bulb.
Is there a difference between high school field lighting and college field lights?
Not really. The difference between the two sports locations has more to do with the light levels needed to satisfy each location’s needs. The brighter you need the sports field to be, the more lights you may need to install. Or, you might have to use more powerful lights.
How many sports lights do I need to light up my field?
The guideline has more to do with foot candles on the playing surface than the number of lights you might think you need. A sports field lighting design and lighting plan will show you how to achieve those light levels. It will determine the number of fixtures you’ll need to achieve the required foot candle levels you’re targeting.

Why Do Metal Halide Lights Take So Long to Turn On in a Sports Field?
It’s not just Metal Halide lights that have this issue. High-Pressure Sodium and other HID lights all have a long strike or warm-up, period. This is just how these lights work.
What’s worse, they also need a long cool-down period. So if they are accidentally turned off, they first must cool down before you start the long warm-up process. This could result in long delays. LED Sports Field Lighting Fixtures are instant on, and if they shut down during play, you can have the lights back on in seconds!

What’s the Best Way to Reduce Glare?
There are several options, but the two best options are mounting height and side shields. Lights mounted on higher poles are less like to be noticed than lights mounted at shorter heights.
Side shields (including a top shield for dark sky compliance) eliminate some of the glare issues produced by these powerful lights.
Does LED Lights for Sport Field Lighting Support 277 Volt to 480 Volt Power Supplies?

How Much Lower Will LED Lights Lower My Utility Bill versus Metal Halide?

How Long Does It Take to Replace My Existing Metal Halide Lights with LED Sports Lighting?
It all depends on where they’re installed and how easy it is to access the lights. High pole mounts are harder to install on a catwalk near the top of a stadium. Make sure you are working with a professional licensed electrician.
