What Are High Temperature LED Lights?

Most LED products fail in temperatures that are higher than what they’re designed for. This means that the lumen output of LED lights in a hot environment will decrease at a much faster rate than it would at cooler temperatures. There is a simple explanation for why. Most LED products work at the upper end of what the LED chips and drivers are capable of performing. These components have an upper range of what is a safe operating temperature they need to be below.

Take the sum of the heat the lights produce and the ambient heat of the surrounding environment. This must be below the stated upper operating temperature of the fixture. When it is not, it reduces the expected life of the fixture and voids the warranty.

LED lights in high-heat environments such as steel mills or foundries with operating temperatures of up to 205° F are tested. The main advantage is these high-temperature fixtures can maintain optimal lumen output as temperatures climb in these high-temperature environments. The light is also designed to provide a long operating life with minimal fixture maintenance.

High-temperature LED fixtures can also work in extreme cold. While this might not make intuitive sense, some of our high-temperature lights can handle extreme cold as well, whereas normal LED lights would fail. The lights that handle 194F and 302F can also operate at -85F. So in many respects, these are also cold temperature LED lights.

High Temperature and Heat Resistant LED Lighting are the same thing. Many people refer to high-temperature lighting as heat-resistant lighting.

LED Lights for High-Temperature Areas refer to lights capable of operating in hot environments. Our high heat-resistant LED lights can operate in temperatures up to 302F.

Above these temperatures, these high-heat LED lights would experience a shortened lifespan. Our high temperature LED fixtures can operate in temperatures well above 150F. We have fixtures that operate up to 212F and 302F.

What are the Benefits of using Heat Resistant LED Lights?

  • Energy Efficient: Reduced utility bills when compared to metal halide and high-pressure sodium bulbs
  • Reduced maintenance: with LED as there are no bulbs and ballasts to change.
  • Long Lifespan:  the lights will be reliable and provide a safer working environment.
  • Engineered:  designed to work in very hot environments up to 302F.
  • Instant On: these lights come to full power instantly

What are the Best Applications for High Temperature LED Lights?

We have sold LED lights for hot, demanding environments to many facilities and warm regions around the world. These include the deserts of California, Arizona, Las Vegas, and the Middle East. We have many nuclear and fossil fuel power generation facilities that use our lights. also, our lights are installed in facilities that use blast and induction furnaces in their manufacturing use our lights. Here are some great applications for LED lights for hot environments:

  • electricity generation (steam turbines)
  • nuclear power plants
  • aluminum manufacturing
  • paper mills
  • steel mills
  • gas plants
  • glass factories
  • metal foundries
  • arc furnaces
  • factories and manufacturing plants

What LED High Temperature Fixture Is Best for You?

176F LED High Temp Lights These lights are designed to handle ambient temperatures rated up to 176F.  Available in LED Wattage from 50 to 450 Watts producing between 6500 and 58,500 lumens.
194F LED Hight Temp Lights These lights are designed to handle ambient temperatures rated up to 194F.  Available in LED Wattage from 40 to 400 Watts producing between 6000 and 52,000 lumens.
212F LED High Temp Lights These lights are designed to handle ambient temperatures rated up to 212F.  Available in LED Wattage from 100 to 200 Watts producing between 15,000 and 30,000 lumens.
302F LED High Temp Lights These lights are designed to handle ambient temperatures rated up to 302F.  Drivers are installed remotely. Available in LED Wattage from 50 to 200 Watts producing between 7500 and 30,000 lumens.
Hazardous-Location High Temp Lights These high-temperature lights are designed to work in dangerous, explosive environments in ambient temperatures rated up to 176F. They are tested under UL844 explosive testing standards. Never use a normal high bay in an environment that requires a hazardous location fixture. Available in C1 D1 and C1 D2.
Dimmable High-Temperature Lights These are high temp LED lights that are dimmable 1-10V

How Many High Temperature Lights Do I Need?

That depends on your building size and your lighting requirements. Are you adding new lights or replacing existing lights? We should be able to replace your existing lights, one for one, with our lights and provide better light levels.

The best place to start is to ask for a lighting plan. A lighting plan will be a computer-generated model of your space with lights installed. It will show you light levels and light balance. From this report, you will get details on what fixture, how many, and where they are located.

Want a lighting plan? We offer free lighting plans for our commercial and industrial customers.

Are There Any Special Considerations When Installing High-Temperature LED Lights?

There is nothing special about the mounting. They are in many ways the same as a normal high bay light. For nuclear power customers, we offer safety cables to meet their standards.

We also recommend you take care not to install the lights directly in the heat exhaust of any furnace. This super-heated air will be too hot for our fixtures.

High Temperature LED Lights FAQ

What are High Temperature LED Lights?

These are specially engineered LED lights designed to operate in hot temperatures from 150F to 302F. They also provide all the same benefits as a normal LED light - energy efficient, high quality lighting with little, if any, maintenance.

What is Light Performance If the Heat Goes Above the Rated Temperature?

If the heat exceeds the rated temperature, you can expect the light to have a shortened lifespan. Please note, that the warranty is void in this case.

What is the Life Expectancy of High-Temperature LED Lights?

We warranty these heat-resistant LED lights for 5 years. In normal operating conditions, you can expect that lifespan. The range depends on

  • how high the temperature is
  • how many days a year that temperature exists
  • how many hours a day the lights are on

All are factors in determining the actual lifespan of these fixtures. In most cases, you can expect many years of bright, high-quality lighting from these fixtures.

Are High-Temperature Fixtures Good for Industrial Applications?

Most, if not all, of these high temp LED lighting fixtures, are designed for high-temperature applications.

What Testing is Performed on High-Temperature Fixtures?

Engineers place the lights in a very hot oven at or near the highest temperature ratings for long periods. The engineers calculate LED and driver life degradation based on these tests. It’s the same way they determine the lifespan of LED lights. The only difference is the testing temperatures for these lights are much higher.

What Voltages Are Supported for High-Temperature Fixtures?

We offer both 100-277V and 277-480V driver options on most high-temperature fixtures.

What Mounting Options Are Available for High-Temperature Fixtures?

The same mounting options as a typical high bay or flood fixture. These include:

  • eye hooks
  • pendant and wire mounting
  • trunnion/yoke mount for ceiling/wall mount applications
