What are LED Canopy Lights?

LED Canopy Lights are commercial outdoor light fixtures found over covered areas and outdoor spaces. They are also found in above-ground and below-ground parking areas and other commercial and professional settings, like car washes, loading areas, drive-throughs, home garage areas, and many other outdoor applications. Canopy lights can work with motion sensors. If the canopy light includes a dimmable driver, then they can dim when cars and people have vacated the area. And when motion’s detected, they turn back on to full power.

Some canopy lights are wet location rated, having an IP rating of IP65 or higher. Another common rating is “Suitable for damp locations”. This is not a true waterproof IP Rating.

They are ceiling-mounted outdoor lights. Since the mounting heights are lower, they tend to have very wide beam angles. This ensures the light can reach as much area as possible. The most common color temperature used with canopies is 5000K. 4000K and 3000K. Some of the canopy lights we offer are color-selectable and wattage-selectable.

Like many LED Lighting fixtures, these lights excel in reliable performance, high lumen output, energy savings, and energy efficiency with lower energy consumption when compared to lesser energy-efficient HID light sources.

Benefits of Using LED Canopy Lights

There are many benefits LED canopy lights have compared to fluorescent or metal halide lighting.

  • They will reduce lighting bills when compared to metal halide, high-pressure sodium, and halogen canopy lights.
  • They work well with dimmers and motion sensors. LED canopy lights can dim when there is no activity in the area.
  • Will provide bright maintenance-free lighting keeping areas lit by them feel safe and inviting.
  • Will require little, if any, maintenance. There are no bulbs or ballasts to replace.

Best Applications for LED Canopy Lights

  • workshops and shop garages
  • low-ceiling workshops
  • gas station canopies
  • underground car parking garages.
  • above-ground parking facilities.
  • warehousing
  • self-storage facilities

Different Types of LED Canopy Lights

150 Watt Equivalent LED Canopy Light These LED canopy fixtures are designed to replace 150 Watt Metal Halide and High-Pressure Sodium. These lights produce between 3700 and 4500 lumens. Some are wattage adjustable.
250 Watt Equivalent LED Canopy Light These LED canopy fixtures are designed to replace 250 Watt Metal Halide and High-Pressure Sodium. They range from 60 to around 90 Watts LED. They produce up to 12,000 lumens
400 Watt Equivalent LED Canopy Light These LED canopy fixtures are designed to replace 400 Watt Metal Halide and High-Pressure Sodium. These 100-watt + LED fixtures produce between 15,000 and 25,000 lumens.
Recessed Mount Canopy Lights These canopy fixtures are mounted inside a recessed box so that they are flush with the ceiling surface. They are common fixtures in gas station canopy applications.
Surface Mount Canopy Lights These canopy fixtures are surface mounted on the ceiling surface. These are commonly found in parking garage applications. They also work great in low-ceiling applications like warehouses and workshops.
Pendant Mounted Canopy Lights These canopy fixtures are pendant mounted from the ceiling surface. This allows you to lower the fixture height. Most of our surface-mounted canopy lights offer a pendant mounting option.
Canopy Lights with Motion Sensors Canopy lighting is available with a motion sensor option. Motion sensors will make the light bright when it detects motion and dims the lights when the area is void of movement and activity.
3000K LED Canopy Lights These canopy lights produce a 3000 Kelvin color temperature. 3000K is a good replacement for high-pressure sodium lighting
4000K LED Canopy Lights These canopy lights produce a 4000 Kelvin color temperature. 4000K is a slightly warmer color than 5000K and is similar to the color temperature produced by fluorescent lighting
5000K LED Canopy Lights These canopy lights produce a 5000 Kelvin color temperature. This is a great choice for replacing metal halide lighting.
Color Adjustable LED Canopy Lights These canopy lights have onboard toggle switches that allow you to choose the color temperature. Typical options are between 3000K and 5000K.
Wattage Adjustable LED Canopy Lights These canopy lights have onboard toggle switches that allow you to choose the power output. This allows you to select the optimal light output even after the light is installed.
LED Canopy Lights with Emergency Backup These canopy lights have a built-in battery back that will keep the fixture lit for up to 90 minutes when the power service is cut off from the fixture.

LED Canopy Lights FAQ

What Are LED Canopy Lights?

LED Canopy Lights are ceiling outdoor light fixtures found over covered areas. They are also found in above-ground and below-ground parking areas. They’re usually ceiling-mounted fixtures. Since the mounting heights are lower, they tend to have very wide beam angles. This ensures the light can reach as much area as possible.

Why Should I Upgrade Existing Canopy Lighting?

There are many reasons to upgrade your existing canopy lighting. The most obvious ones are reducing your lighting bill and maintenance. They are also a high-quality safe lighting source for making dark areas far more inviting for customers and employees. They will also never hum or flicker, like tired fluorescent lights and ballast do.

What Are the Benefits of LED Canopy Lights?

Many LED canopy lights offer the same benefits over fluorescent or metal halide. They reduce lighting bills. They work well with dimmers and motion sensors, so the lights can dim when there is no activity in the area. This will lower your lighting bills even more, and prolong the lifespan of the light. They work well at lower mounting heights.

What Are the Different Types of LED Canopy Lights?

There are two main types of LED Canopy Lights: recessed-mounted and surface-mounted. Recessed mounts are installed in pre-made inserts inside overhead canopies. These are very common at your local gas station. Surface mount, or ceiling surface mount, is mounted directly to the ceiling surface. Out of the two types, surface mount is more common to see in commercial settings. Many of the canopies we offer can also be pendant mounted.

How Can You Choose Between an LED Canopy and a UFO Fixture?

There are some significant differences between these fixtures. First, you have to understand the usage and application of the fixture. If the ceiling heights are short, < 12 feet, a UFO fixture’s beam angle might not be able to cast a wide enough beam pattern.

For security and vandal reasons, UFO fixtures are not ceiling-mounted like canopy lights.

How Can You Choose Between an LED Canopy and an LED Vapor Proof Fixture?

Vapor-proof fixtures make great replacements for fluorescent-style canopy lights. You see these lights in above-ground and below-ground parking spaces. Unlike UFOs, you could choose a vapor-tight fixture or a canopy light and get great results from either light.

Vapor-proof fixtures are a great option when there are contaminants in the area that might otherwise shorten the life of a canopy light.

How Easy is it to Install LED Canopy Lights?

Canopy lights mount to a ceiling surface, making them a great replacement option. The installation of canopy lights is quick and easy. It’s no more difficult than installing a metal halide or fluorescent fixture. For a qualified electrician, all mounting hardware is included. The wiring is simple, there are only three wires to connect, line, neutral, and ground.
