What Is a Class 3 Wood Pole?

Class 3 wood poles offer a middle-range structural option for utility, communications, and lighting projects. They may be appropriate when the approved loads require more capacity than Classes 4 through 10 provide, but do not justify the larger dimensions and weight associated with Class 1 or Class 2 poles.

A pole’s class is based on its species, length, minimum dimensions, taper, and associated strength characteristics. Class 3 does not describe one fixed pole size, and two Class 3 poles of different lengths or species may have different ground-line dimensions.

When Does a Class 3 Pole Make Sense?

Class 3 can be a practical choice when a project needs meaningful structural capacity without the additional size, weight, freight requirements, and installation demands of a Class 1 or Class 2 pole. It is commonly evaluated for distribution, communications, roadway and street lighting poles, parking-area lighting, and other moderate-duty infrastructure projects.

Class numbers move in the opposite direction from relative pole capacity. For comparable lengths and species, Class 1 and Class 2 poles generally have larger minimum dimensions and greater capacity than Class 3. Classes 4, 5, and 6 generally have progressively smaller minimum dimensions.

This does not make one class universally better than another. A heavier pole may add unnecessary material, weight, freight, excavation, and handling costs. Selecting Class 3 Poles for Lighting Projects

A Class 3 pole may support area, roadway, parking-lot, or recreational lighting when its structural capacity is suitable for the selected fixtures and site conditions. Pole class should be evaluated separately from the photometric design.

The photometric plan can determine the mounting heights, fixture locations, wattages, optics, and pole spacing needed to achieve the target light levels. Structural selection must then account for:

  • Number of fixtures mounted on each pole
  • Fixture, arm, crossarm, and bracket weight
  • Total projected area or EPA of the mounted equipment
  • Fixture attachment height and orientation

Lowering the fixture wattage does not necessarily reduce the structural requirement. Fixture shape, quantity, mounting arrangement, projected area, and attachment height may be more important than wattage when evaluating pole loading.

Selecting Class 3 Poles for Utility and Communications Work

For utility and communications projects, the pole must be evaluated as part of the complete line design. Relevant loads may include conductors, service drops, transformers, crossarms, insulators, communications cables, equipment cabinets, and other attachments.

Span length, line direction, dead ends, line angles, attachment height, wind, ice, and guying can substantially affect the required pole class. A pole used on a straight section of line may have different loading requirements from one at a corner, termination point, or equipment location.

Choosing the Wood Species

Wood species affect pole strength characteristics, taper, dimensions, preservative treatment, weight, and regional availability. CCA Treatment and Ground-Contact Protection

Class 3 wood poles may be pressure treated with chromated copper arsenate, commonly called CCA. CCA is a wood preservative used to protect treated wood against fungi, termites, and other organisms that can degrade the material.

Preservative treatment does not determine the ANSI pole class. ANSI O5.1 addresses pole quality and dimensions, while treatment type, penetration, retention, and use conditions are specified separately. Direct Embedment and Setting Depth

Class 3 wood poles are typically installed by placing a specified portion of the pole below grade and compacting approved backfill around it. The total pole length is therefore not the same as the usable height above grade.
