Understanding 277-480V LED High Bay Lights

480 volt LED high bay lights use a 277-480V high-voltage driver for commercial and industrial facilities with compatible electrical service. They are commonly installed in warehouses, manufacturing plants, aircraft hangars, distribution centers, and other large buildings where the lighting circuits operate above the range supported by standard-voltage fixtures.

The most important distinction is the fixture's input-voltage range:

  • 100-277V drivers are commonly used on 120V, 208V, 240V, and 277V lighting circuits.
  • 277-480V drivers are designed for compatible high-voltage circuits, including 277V and 480V service.

A high bay rated only for 100-277V should not be installed on a 480V circuit. Likewise, a fixture should not be selected simply because “480” appears elsewhere in its specifications. Confirm the exact input-voltage range listed on the individual product specification before ordering.

Volts and Watts Are Different: Voltage identifies the electrical input accepted by the driver. Wattage describes how much power the fixture consumes. A 200-watt high bay may use either a 100-277V driver or a 277-480V driver, depending on the model.

When to Choose a 277-480V High Bay

Select a 277-480V LED high bay when the existing lighting circuit and facility electrical service require a high-voltage fixture. These models can support high-bay replacement projects without stepping the lighting circuit down to a lower fixture voltage, provided the selected fixture is compatible with the measured supply voltage and installation requirements.

Before choosing a fixture, confirm:

  • The actual circuit voltage
  • The voltage range shown on the fixture driver or specification sheet
  • The existing fixture type and wattage
  • The mounting height and required lumen output
  • The fixture style, optics, and mounting method
  • Any required dimming, sensor, or emergency-lighting compatibility

Voltage determines whether the fixture can be connected safely, but it does not determine how much light the fixture will produce. After confirming driver compatibility, select lumen output and distribution according to the mounting height, fixture spacing, layout, and required foot-candle levels.

Replacing Existing 480V High Bay Fixtures

Facilities replacing 480V metal halide, high-pressure sodium, or fluorescent high bays should select LED fixtures with a documented input range that includes 480V. Do not assume that every commercial high bay supports high-voltage service; many otherwise similar fixtures are offered with separate 100-277V and 277-480V driver options.

The correct LED replacement should be based on the required light output and distribution rather than matching the wattage of the old fixture. Existing HID systems may have experienced lumen depreciation, and two LED fixtures using the same wattage can produce different lumen levels and beam patterns.

For larger projects, high-rack warehouses, manufacturing areas, or facilities with defined light-level requirements, a photometric lighting plan can help verify fixture quantity, spacing, output, and optics before installation.

Installation and Product Verification

High-voltage lighting circuits should be tested before fixtures are ordered or installed. The selected fixture, driver, disconnect, wiring, controls, sensors, and emergency components must be compatible with the circuit and intended application.

Review the individual product specification for:

  • Input voltage: Verify that the listed driver range includes the measured circuit voltage.
  • Safety certification: Confirm a recognized listing such as UL, ETL, or CSA, depending on the product.
  • Dimming and controls: Confirm compatibility when sensors or 0-10V controls will be used.
  • Environmental rating: Verify wet-location, ingress-protection, temperature, and impact ratings where applicable.
  • DLC status: Confirm the exact model listing when utility rebate eligibility is required.
  • Warranty: Most LED high bays include a 5-year warranty unless otherwise specified.
Electrical Safety Note: Do not determine fixture compatibility from nominal building service alone. Confirm the voltage at the lighting circuit and verify the selected fixture's driver rating.
