LED Explosion-Proof Flood Lights for Hazardous Areas

LED explosion-proof flood lights provide directional illumination in hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present under abnormal conditions. Our current flood lights are designed for Class 1 Div 2 lighting applications and can be used indoors or outdoors when the selected model’s ratings match the installation.

These fixtures are commonly used around tank farms, fuel-handling areas, loading zones, refineries, chemical-processing sites, wastewater facilities, industrial yards, and outdoor process equipment. Adjustable yoke or slip-fitter mounting allows the light to be aimed toward work areas, equipment, walkways, and site perimeters.

Choosing a Class 1 Div 2 Flood Light

Confirm the hazardous-area classification before selecting wattage or lumen output. A Class 1 Div 2 fixture should only be used where flammable gases or vapors are normally contained but may become present because of a leak, equipment failure, or another abnormal condition. It should not be installed where Class 1 Div 1 lighting equipment is required.

Before ordering, verify:

  • Classification and group: Match the fixture’s Class 1 Div 2 listing and gas group to the area requirements.
  • T-rating: Confirm the maximum fixture surface temperature is appropriate for the hazardous material present.
  • Light output and optics: Select lumens and beam angle according to mounting height, aiming distance, coverage area, and required foot-candle levels.
  • Mounting: Confirm yoke, bracket, or slip-fitter compatibility with the pole, wall, structure, or equipment platform.

Explosion-proof flood lights are directional fixtures. Proper aiming is important to reduce dark areas, excessive glare, and unwanted spill light. A photometric plan may be appropriate for larger sites, elevated mounting positions, security zones, or projects with defined light-level requirements.

Explosion Proof Is More Than Weather Resistance

An IP-rated or wet-location flood light is not automatically approved for a hazardous classified area. IP ratings address protection against dust and water entering the enclosure. Hazardous-location approval addresses the fixture’s ability to operate safely where specified gases or vapors may be present.

The fixture’s Class, Division, Group, T-rating, ambient range, and certification must all match the installation requirements.

Certifications, Installation, and Warranty

Selected models may carry certifications such as UL 844, ETL, CSA, ATEX, or IECEx, depending on the product. Confirm the exact certification, hazardous-location markings, voltage, mounting, environmental ratings, and controls before ordering.

The complete electrical installation – including conduit, fittings, seals, junction boxes and lighting controls, grounding, and bonding – must also be suitable for the classified area. Installation and fixture aiming should be completed by a qualified electrician experienced with hazardous locations and reviewed against applicable codes, project documents, and authority-having-jurisdiction requirements.
