The Backstory of Our Relationship with St. Francis Borgia High School

LED Lighting Supply was approached by Travis Stockhorst, Maintenance Director at St. Francis Borgia High School in Washington, Missouri.

Referred to us by one of our sports field lighting customers, Travis was seeking professional support for the school’s football and soccer field lighting upgrade. At the time of his inquiry, the field operated on aging 1500-watt metal halide lights, creating inadequate light levels.

The Challenge of Lighting St. Francis Borgia High School’s Football and Soccer Field

The legacy lighting in place produced glare and shadows on the field, impacting player performance while increasing safety risks. Due to tight budgets, the field required an updated lighting system that would adhere to the four existing 60-foot poles.

The project required confirmation of local football and soccer field lighting requirements before our team could create a photometric lighting plan and a custom light fixture recommendation.

The Strategy and Solution of the LED Flood light Upgrade

LED Lighting Supply’s Product Specialist, Joe Hawkins, provided an initial consultation to understand the project requirements, including the school’s budget, the request to use the existing poles, and the replacement-bulb suggestion.

The Athletic Association had proposed using the existing light fixture housing with replacement bulbs as a cost-effective alternative to a complete lighting upgrade.

Relying on a replacement bulb for the upgrade requires use of the legacy fixture housing, which leads to constant maintenance and repair issues. We recommended a cost-effective solution to avoid bulb replacement while allowing for a complete LED upgrade within the school’s budget.

Football and soccer field lighting that is not aimed or shielded properly can create light pollution, cause excess light to shine into neighboring areas, and lead to local compliance issues. With the project budget, existing poles, and voltage specifications in mind, we recommended 600-watt high-voltage flood lights with top visors as the ideal solution.

From there, our team created a lighting plan layout with fixture counts to illustrate light levels across the field after installation. The goal was to achieve the recommended light level for sports fields with surrounding tracks and multipurpose use, which falls between 20 and 50 foot-candles (fc) modeled in the lighting plan.

The Result of Our LED Recommendation on the Field

The football and soccer field lighting project involved placing twelve 600-watt high-voltage flood lights per pole, with two poles on each horizontal side of the field. The LED lighting recommendation increases effective player performance and safety while staying within the set budget.

The light levels achieved on the field reach 34 fc, which falls within the recommended range we provided as the project target. The upgrade also creates a uniformity ratio of 1.61, meaning the illumination is consistent across the entire field.

Fully replacing the metal halide lighting system with LEDs yields significant energy and maintenance savings for the school.
