I’m Neil Peterson with LED Lighting Supply. Today, I’m going to discuss lighting options for baseball and softball sports fields. Traditionally, baseball fields have used large round visor fixtures. These are bulky and heavy. Last year, we introduced a new fixture called the IMF Modular Flood Light. It’s a robust, heavy-duty fixture that offers several advantages: it’s more compact, lighter in weight, and equipped with specialized optics that allow for exceptional lighting performance on baseball and softball fields.

Pole Configuration and Lighting Needs

If you’re working with an existing baseball field, your light poles likely range between 30 and 60 feet in height. Typically, you might have 2 to 4 poles in the infield and another 2 to 4 in the outfield, depending on the level of play and how much light is required. Here are some common lighting level recommendations:
  • Little League / Recreational Fields:
    • 50 foot-candles in the infield
    • 30 foot-candles in the outfield
  • Lower-Level Play:
    • 30 foot-candles in the infield
    • 10-15 foot-candles in the outfield
  • College / Professional Fields:
    • Much higher light levels, based on league and performance requirements
We can create lighting plans tailored to any light level or field configuration.

Fixture Options and Performance

  • 600W Unit: Produces over 90,000 lumens
  • 400W Unit: Outputs nearly 60,000 lumens
  • Other Models: Example unit at 72,000 lumens
The appropriate fixture depends on your specific needs: the number of poles, the required brightness, and your lighting goals. Once we understand these variables, we can develop a custom lighting plan that outlines exactly what light levels you’ll achieve.

Voltage and Mounting Options

All fixtures come standard with 100V-277V support. We also stock models that support 480V systems and low-voltage applications. Mounting options include:
  • Trunnion mount (standard)
  • Slip fitter pipe adapter (optional)
Note that traditional stadium lights typically come only with the trunnion mount.
