The Backstory

Arizona Algae Products LLC was moving its warehouse operation to a newly constructed building and needed lighting for the center section of the space, which included two platforms, a walkway, and equipment that could create shadowing issues. They initially had only a rough estimate of what they might need and were seeking guidance on lighting for hazardous locations, wattage, fixture count, placement, and overall layout. The Director of Facilities and Maintenance, Christopher Knizeski, reached out to LED Lighting Supply and was paired up with Product Specialist Jake Hoffman for expert support in these areas.

The Customer Challenge

The customer knew they needed Class 1 Division 2 (C1D2) rated lighting for the area. This means flammable gases, vapors, or liquids could be present under abnormal conditions, such as equipment leaks or ventilation failures. Due to these factors, the area required an explosion-proof lighting solution. The fixtures needed to meet the safety demands of the environment while delivering strong, uniform illumination for a functional work area.

As the conversation developed, it became clear this wasn't a simple fixture installation. The customer needed to light a new warehouse workspace in a building that was still being constructed. The section being lit was obstructed by equipment and piping, all of which created the potential for shadowing and dark spots. The customer needed an expert's guidance to ensure the final lighting plan would support visibility, safety, and day-to-day work in the warehouse.

The Strategy & Solution

The LED Lighting Supply team and Jake took a consultative approach instead of simply quoting fixtures based on the customer's initial estimate. Rather than treating the request as a straightforward order, he worked to understand the space, the work being done in it, and the constraints that could affect light performance. Jake worked to understand the hazardous details in relation to the type of work done in the area. The space is mainly used for manufacturing and product processing. Explosion poof fixtures are important because the area and equipment are at risk of containing flammable gases, vapors, or liquids.

From there, he gathered layout details and reviewed the 3D files of the space Arizona Algae Products supplied. The engineering team was involved to assess shadowing concerns around the obstructions. This process guided the customer toward the right combination of fixture type, output, and placement for an explosion-proof workspace. While the space is a simple rectangle, the piping and conduit above made it more difficult to work around than it would have been if the building construction had been finished.

The solution was to mount six 200W explosion-proof LED fixtures in the area, supported by a custom lighting plan, quote, and layout guidance. The outcome was a safe warehouse space designed to deliver strong coverage in a challenging and hazardous environment.

These advanced fixtures provided several key benefits:

  • Lower energy consumption while maintaining high light output, improving efficiency across large factory floor areas
  • Certified explosion-proof construction designed for hazardous locations helps prevent ignition in areas with flammable gases, vapors, or dust
  • Superior visibility with high-quality optics and strong color rendering improves worker safety and task accuracy on the production floor
  • Instant-on reliability with no warm-up delay ensures immediate illumination during startup, shutdown, or emergencies
  • Sealed fixtures engineered to resist dust, moisture, vibration, and corrosive factory conditions for long-term durability

The Results

Even before installation, Christopher's response reflected confidence in the project:

"We received the lights. It was a quick 5–6 weeks. I'm happy we got them. Thanks for your help, Jake."

After installation, Arizona Algae Products confirmed the project was complete by sharing photos with Jake of the fixtures in place through their email follow-up conversation. This gave LED Lighting Supply confirmation of the project's success.

LED Lighting Supply’s guidance helped turn an uncertain layout into a practical lighting solution. The warehouse lighting meets C1D2 standards for hazardous areas while providing enough illumination to avoid dark spots around platforms and equipment. The LED fixtures deliver an average foot candle (fc) reading of 62, which falls within the recommended range for industrial warehouse environments.
