Sports and athletic fields need to have quality lighting to provide ideal visibility for both players and fans. High-powered stadium lights and flood lights are the fixtures of choice for these venues. They are mounted on tall light poles so that the field of play can be properly illuminated at night or on overcast days. Athletic field light poles need to be safe, durable, and properly placed so that light is uniform and glare-free. They are ideal for ball parks, sports fields, open public spaces and other outdoor recreational facilities.

How Much Do Athletic Field Light Poles Cost?

The cost for sports and athletic field light poles will depend on three factors: material, height, and load capacity. Some materials will cost more than others, such as fiberglass or aluminum. A shorter pole will not cost as much as a longer one. Stronger poles, built to hold more light fixtures or better handle high winds, will cost more than others. We also offer options like cross arms to mount lights on.

What is the Proper Spacing for Sports Lighting Poles?

Spacing for sports field lighting poles will depend on the type of sports field that you’ll be illuminating. Here are the basics:

Baseball / Softball Fields: There are different options for pole spacing depending on how many poles you’ll use and the level of play. 4, 6, and 8 pole configurations will determine where the poles are placed. At a minimum, you’ll want to place 2 poles behind the diamond and 2 poles behind the outfield fence.

American Football Fields: American football fields are the same size regardless of the competition. As with baseball/softball fields, you can use a 4, 6, or 8 pole configuration but they will be spaced differently because of the rectangular shape of the field. An equal number of poles are placed along each sideline and depending on the specific layout, 50 to 100 feet outside the playing field.

Soccer Fields: Unlike American football fields, not all soccer fields are the same size. They can range from 100 to 130 yards in length and 50 to 100 yards wide. This depends on the level of play. There is generally more square footage for a soccer field than for an American football field.

Where they are similar to American football fields is that you can use a 4, 6, or 8 pole configuration and place an equal number of poles on the sidelines.

What is the Ideal Athletic Field Light Pole Mounting Heights?

The height of sports field lighting poles will depend on the type of sports field that you’ll be illuminating. Here are the basics:

Baseball Fields – Pole height will depend on the level of play and the size of the field.

  • Recreational and little league field light poles: 30-50 feet
  • High school field light poles: 40-60 feet
  • College field light poles: 40-80 feet
  • Major League Baseball stadium light poles: 80-190 feet

American Football Fields:

  • Recreational, high school & college light poles: 40-60 feet
  • NFL stadium light poles: Up to 200 feet

Soccer Fields – Pole height will depend on the level of play and the size of the field.

  • High school and college field light poles: 40-60 feet
