Shoebox Fixture Lighting Layout Estimator

Use this estimator to calculate approximate fixture count, pole placement, spacing, and average foot-candles for parking lots, exterior areas, and outdoor sport court applications using the selected LED shoebox fixture. Enter the area size, mounting height, target foot-candles, light loss factor, and outdoor light use factor to generate a preliminary layout.

Estimated average foot-candles are preliminary. The visual heat map is normalized to the estimated average and is intended to show approximate coverage behavior, not a verified lighting plan.

Parking Lot / Exterior Area Mode: Fixtures are placed on poles along the longest edges of the area. Edge fixtures are modeled as level / down-facing shoebox fixtures with the optic directed inward. For wider parking areas, a center row can be added.

Sport Court Mode: Poles are placed on the long edges of the court. Fixtures are modeled as level / down-facing and directed toward court coverage zones instead of being tilted toward one center point.

Photometry / Simulation Note: When usable IES photometry is available for the selected fixture, this estimator uses the fixture’s IES candela data to improve the visual ground-level light distribution. When IES photometry is not available, the estimator uses a simulated Type 3 or Type 5 optic model based on lumens, mounting height, outdoor light use factor, light loss factor, and fixture direction.

Outdoor Light Use Factor: Suggested starting points: open rectangular paved area 0.60–0.70, typical parking lot 0.45–0.60, areas with setbacks or edge losses 0.35–0.50, complex outdoor sites 0.25–0.40.

Preliminary Estimate Only: This estimator is intended for simple rectangular outdoor areas. Actual light levels may vary based on fixture optics, pole setbacks, mounting height, fixture orientation, distribution type, surface reflectance, obstructions, voltage, installation conditions, spill light requirements, and site-specific requirements.

Need Verified Outdoor Light Levels?

This estimate is a starting point. Parking lots, roadways, sport courts, public areas, campuses, vehicle areas, and code-sensitive exterior projects should be reviewed with a lighting plan before purchase or installation.

Shoebox Estimator Version 2.1.9

Product Overview

This adjustable LED shoe box light provides 28,800 to 43,400 lumens for parking lot lighting, area lighting, and commercial site lighting. It operates on 100V-277V and uses a Type 3 distribution for forward-directed exterior coverage.

The fixture has selectable 200W, 240W, and 300W output settings with selectable 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K color temperatures. It is rated as a replacement for 1000 watt metal halide fixtures.

Core Performance and Output

Output settings are 28,800 lumens at 200W, 34,500 lumens at 240W, and 43,400 lumens at 300W. Fixture efficacy is 160 lumens per watt with a 70+ CRI and Type 3 optical distribution through a polycarbonate lens.

The fixture operates at 100V-277V, 50/60Hz, with a 0.9 power factor and 15% THD. Higher output can reduce fixture count in a layout, but may create excessive light levels at lower mounting heights.

Type 3 distribution supports forward throw from pole-mounted positions. Uniformity depends on mounting height, pole placement, output selection, and site layout.

Adjustability and Control Options

Integrated wattage adjustment allows the fixture to operate at 200W, 240W, or 300W. Color temperature is selectable between 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K before final operation.

The fixture supports 0-10V dimming and includes a built-in photocell. These functions allow output and operating schedule requirements to be addressed within the lighting design.

Longevity and Reliability

The LED system is rated for 150,000 L70 hours. The fixture includes 6 kV surge protection for exterior electrical conditions.

Operating temperature is -40 degrees F to 122 degrees F. The five-year warranty applies to the fixture.

Build Quality and Physical Characteristics

The housing is die-cast aluminum with a bronze finish. The fixture is IP65 rated and uses a polycarbonate lens.

Fixture dimensions are 16.5 x 12.2 x 2.5 inches. Weight is 7.2 pounds, and the EPA rating is 1.6.

Where This Product Fits Best

This fixture fits pole-mounted exterior lighting layouts that require substantial forward-directed output. The adjustable wattage and color temperature settings support projects with changing light-level or color requirements.

  • parking lot lighting
  • commercial site lighting
  • area lighting
  • roadway perimeter lighting
  • campus lighting
  • industrial yard lighting

The IP65 housing, die-cast aluminum construction, surge protection, and listed operating temperature range support exterior operating conditions. Final mounting selection must match the pole, bracket, or tenon arrangement.

Installation and Long-Term Use

Available mounting options are yoke, arm, and slip fitter. The selected mounting method must match the existing pole or structural mounting arrangement and support the fixture EPA rating.

Set wattage and color temperature before commissioning the fixture. Verify photocell orientation and 0-10V control wiring when those functions are used.

How This Fixture Is Commonly Used

For parking lot lighting, commercial site lighting, and area lighting, fixtures are commonly placed on poles to direct Type 3 distribution outward from the mounting point. Mounting height should be coordinated with the desired coverage pattern and light levels.

Roadway perimeter lighting and industrial yard lighting layouts typically use repeated pole positions along the site boundary or travel path. Spacing varies with mounting height, selected wattage, Type 3 distribution, and required uniformity.

Safety, Certifications, and Warranty

This fixture is UL listed. It is rebate eligible.

The fixture is IP65 rated and includes 6 kV surge protection. Warranty coverage is five years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What output settings are available?

A: The fixture has selectable 200W, 240W, and 300W settings producing 28,800, 34,500, and 43,400 lumens.

Q: What color temperatures are available?

A: Color temperature is selectable at 3000K, 4000K, or 5000K.

Q: Does this fixture support dimming?

A: Yes. The fixture supports 0-10V dimming.

Q: Which mounting options are available?

A: Available mounting options are yoke, arm, and slip fitter.

Q: How should fixture spacing be planned for parking lot lighting?

A: Mounting height, selected wattage, Type 3 distribution, target light levels, and layout requirements affect spacing. A specific spacing value is not established by the supplied product data.

Application Questions and Clarification

Q: Is this fixture suitable for roadway perimeter lighting?

A: Roadway perimeter lighting is a listed primary application. Type 3 distribution provides forward-directed light from the mounting location.

Q: What should be confirmed before selecting a mounting method?

A: Confirm whether the installation requires yoke, arm, or slip fitter mounting. The mounting arrangement must also align with the fixture EPA rating of 1.6.

Q: What conditions affect output selection for commercial site lighting?

A: The available 200W, 240W, and 300W settings provide different lumen outputs. Mounting height, layout requirements, and target light levels affect final output selection.
