What Is Class 1 Div 2 Lighting?

Class 1 Div 2 lights is a classification of explosion ratings designed to work in explosive environments where hazardous conditions and concentrations of flammable combustible vapors, liquids or gases, are sometimes present. You often find Class 1 Div 2 Lights outdoors and Class 1 Div 1 Lights indoors.

What Are the Benefits of Class 1 Div 2 Lighting?

Like other LED lights, explosion proof fixtures provide the same key benefits - energy saving, reduced maintenance and improved quality of light. They also meet the certification requirements needed in a Class1 Div 2 application and will provide a safe lighting environment.

What is a Class 1 Div 2 Hazardous Area?

Class 1 hazardous areas are defined as groups. Groups are categorized by the type of material found. The most common groups are: (A) Acetylene, (B) Hydrogen, (C) Ethylene and/or Propane and (D) Propane, Butane, Methane and Benzene.

The difference between Division 1 and Division 2 within this class is whether the hazardous environment is always or sometimes present.


Does Class 1 Div 2 Require a Seal?

UL844 Class 1 Div 2 certification is very specific about what a fixture must or must not have. If you purchase a light that has been tested and certified to this standard, it’s the requirement you need. You should not be concerned about needing to supply an additional seal for these fixtures, it is 100% complete.

Do You Have Class 1 Div 2 Lighting in Stock?

Yes, we have Class 1 Div 2 lights in stock. Our main warehouse is in Nashua, NH, but we have other products located in other warehouses across the country.

What Conduit Can Be Used in Class 1 Div 2?

Class 1 Div 2 rated conduit or higher. Everything in the room related to the lighting must be explosion proof rated. That includes the conduit, junction boxes and switches.

What are the best applications for Class 1 Div 2 lighting?

Does ATEX Rated Count for Class 1 Div 2?

It does not. ATEX is a competing certification to the UL Standard used in other countries that are not the USA and Canada. In North America, we rely on the UL844 certification for explosion proof fixtures, not the ATEX standard.

Can I Get Away with using a Vapor Tight Fixture?

No. Never use a vapor tight fixture in place of a Class 1 Div 2 lighting fixture. It does not provide the certification required and will create an unsafe location.

Does Class 1 Div 2 Require Intrinsically Safe?

It does not. Class 1 Div 2 lighting can be either explosion proof rated or Intrinsically safe lighting. They are just two different ways engineers came up with to solve the problem of not having lights create an explosion inside a hazardous environment.

Is IP66 Class 1 Div 2?

No. IP66 is a dust and water ingress standard. It is used to tell you how waterproof and dustproof the fixture is. Our explosion proof fixtures are also IP66 or higher rated, but that is not the standard that makes them explosion proof.


What Accessories Are Needed to Install Class 1 Div 2 Lighting?

Everything this light is connected to inside the room also needs to be Class 1 Div 2 rated or higher. There are some accessories available, but they are limited due to the special nature of this fixture. Let us know what your needs are and we can identify what exactly is required.


Is the Cord Coming Out of the Fixture Rated Class 1 Div 2 or Do I Need to Remove It?

Most of our C1D2 LED Explosion Proof fixtures include at least a 1-foot power cord. It is intended to show how the fixture is wired. In most cases the installation includes wiring to the driver/wiring box on the fixture.

Installation and wiring requirements of an explosion proof fixtures is governed by you local Building Inspector or Fire Marshall. Please refer to them for the requirements for new installations.

If you already have fixtures installed that you are upgrading, in most cases you will be able to reuse the conduit and junction boxes assuming you will be mounting the same as the current installation. The installation of explosion proof fixtures requires that there be no bare wires exposed.

How Do I Install Class 1 Div 2 Lights?

You should never do this by yourself. This must be done by a qualified electrician.

Do You Need a Class 1 Div 2 Lighting Plan?

A lighting plan uses specialized lighting software to create a model of your indoor or outdoor space, place explosion proof lighting in this space, and then calculate light levels and how balanced the light is in the area.

It takes away all the guesswork and makes converting to LED lights simple and easy.
