Installing LED Fixtures with a Dimming Switch – Key Considerations

LED dimming can be a great feature for controlling light levels, but proper installation is essential. In this video, Neil Peterson from LED Lighting Supply explains how dimming works, what fixtures support it, and key factors to consider.

Key Considerations for Installing LED Dimming

  • Use a Licensed Electrician: Always hire a professional for installation.
  • Compatible Fixtures: High bays, linear fixtures, canopies, and other dimmable LED fixtures can be connected to a dimmer switch.
  • Specialty Dimmers Required: Unlike traditional line dimming used in fluorescent and A19 bulbs, LEDs require a 0-10V or 1-10V dimmer.

Finding the Right Dimmer

  • Standard line dimmers found at home improvement stores (e.g., Home Depot, Lowe’s) are NOT compatible.
  • 0-10V or 1-10V dimmers must be ordered online or through electrical suppliers.

How LED Dimming Works

  • Dimming lines run from fixture to fixture, connecting to the dimmer switch.
  • The switch communicates with the fixtures to control brightness.
  • 0-10V Dimming: Allows fixtures to dim all the way to OFF.
  • 1-10V Dimming: Only dims to the lowest level; must be manually turned off.

Best Applications for Dimming

  • Church recreation rooms (adjustable brightness for meetings vs. activities)
