What Is Class 1 Div 1 LED Lighting?

Class 1 Division 1, or C1D1, is a classification of explosion ratings. It’s designed to work in explosive environments  where hazardous conditions and concentrations of flammable combustible vapors, liquids or gases, are always present.

What Is a Class 1 Division 1 Area?

Class 1 Areas are groups. Groups categorized by the type of material found. The most common groups are:

(A) Acetylene
(B) Hydrogen
(C) Ethylene and/or propane
(D) Propane, butane, methane and benzene.

It is common to see C1D1 Groups C and D but not C1D1 Groups A and B.

Is Class 1 Div 1 Stricter Than Class 1 Div 2?

Yes, it is. C1D1 is the strictest of all standards, followed by Class 1 Div 2.

What’s the Difference Between Class 1 Div 1 and Class 1 Div 2?

The main difference is the presence of gas or other explosive materials. C1D1 handles ‘always present’, while C1D2 is for ‘sometimes present’ environments.

Is Class 1 Div 1 the Same as Atex?

Class 1 Division 1 is a classification of explosion proof lighting that we use in North America. ATEX is a different standard not used in this country. Lights that are UL rated and tested for C1D1 do not always qualify for ATEX certification and vice versa. In other words, a similar ATEX classification to C1D1 does not mean the light has met UL standards for C1D1.

What Are the Benefits of Using Class 1 Div 1 LED Lighting?

Like other LED lights, explosion proof fixtures provide the same key benefits. Energy saving, reduced maintenance and improved quality of light. They also meet the certification requirements needed in a Class 1 Div 1 applications. And they will provide a safe lighting environment.
