What are LED Tennis Court Lights?
LED Lights for tennis courts are powerful, bright and provide a high-quality light source. LED tennis court lights are available for both indoor tennis courts and outdoor tennis courts.
Indoor tennis court lights are typically ceiling-mounted and shine down. Secondly, some upshine models point the light upwards and reflect off a highly reflective roof.
Outdoor tennis court lights are typically pole-mounted fixtures. They are either shoebox fixtures (the most common fixture) or floodlights. Shoebox fixtures with Type III optics work well for outdoor tennis courts.
LED tennis court lights can easily replace metal halide lights. They produce high lumen – high-quality lighting. They turn on instantly and are virtually maintenance-free.
Voltage options range from 100 - 277 Volts or 277 - 480 Volts. The best color temperature for tennis courts is 5000K. 4000K would be a second choice if you’re looking for a warmer light.
In choosing the best optics for lighting, no one optic meets all needs. It depends on your pole heights and lighting requirements. A lighting plan will sort that all out for you. A lighting plan will detail the fixture, wattage, lumens, optics, number of fixtures, and where to point them.
What are the Benefits of Using LED Lights for Tennis Courts?
Tennis court LED lights have several advantages over metal halide lights
- Energy Savings: you can expect energy savings of at least 50%-75%.
- Powerful lighting: replace metal halide lights with LED lights one for one.
- Lower maintenance costs: there are no bulbs or ballasts to change.
- Slow lumen depreciation with LED: HID / Metal Halide Lights' lumens drop significantly over a short period.
- Instant On: LED tennis court lights are instant on and instant off. No slow warm-up periods.
- High-quality lighting: these lights will produce high-quality light for years.
- Great Fan and Player Experience: A high-quality light source provides a well-lit court.
What are the Best Types of LED Lighting for Tennis Courts?
For indoor tennis lighting, LED lights for tennis courts are mounted on the ceiling. The light points down, similar to a gym light. Or points upwards, reflecting against a white reflective surface.
For outdoor tennis courts, lights are pole-mounted on the perimeter of the court. They resemble shoebox lights or parking lot lights. These lights use special optics to “throw” the light toward the center of the court.

What's the Best Way to Design Tennis Court Lighting?
The best way is to determine what your needs are in terms of light levels and any restrictions to light placement.
From there, we recommend creating a lighting plan. A lighting plan will achieve many things:
- it will confirm light levels and light balance
- the right fixture with the right optic package
- total number of fixtures, and where they should be located
This essentially takes the risk out of choosing the right light and achieving the results you are looking for.

LED Tennis Court Lights FAQ
What are the Best LED Fixtures for Indoor Tennis Courts?
There are two options. And it all depends on whether you want light pointing downwards or upwards.
The best tennis LED sports lighting pointing downwards is high bay lights. We recommend UFO lights with a frosted lens. It will reduce the amount of glare produced. These lights are powerful, bright, and robust. So hitting them with a tennis ball will not cause any damage.
If your tennis club uses up-lighting, a cost-effective solution is to retrofit with a retrofit kit. This allows you to keep your lights and convert them to LED. Or, we do have fixtures that can be pointed up and reflected down on the court, like our high-power flood lights.
What are the Best LED Fixtures for Outdoor Tennis Courts?
There are two options, and both are pole-mounted solutions.
If the poles are mounted near the perimeter of the court, then a shoebox-style light is a good option. You must choose the right type of optic package for these lights. Some are particularly good at lighting up courts and not the area behind the courts. They’re considered ‘forward-throw’ optics. And most shoebox lights meant for parking lots are not meant for tennis courts.
If the poles are mounted further back, flood lights are a great option to light up the outdoor court area. The floodlight power and beam angle you need rely completely on your requirements. And physical locations of the poles.
How Does LED Lighting Improve Tennis Court Play?
The quality of light far exceeds metal halide and fluorescent lights. Without all the hassle these lights have. The light quality and light levels will last a long time. And with proper planning, you can achieve balanced lighting across the playing surface.
What is the Best Lighting Distribution for Outdoor Tennis Court Lighting?
In the world of LED, we can take advantage of well-designed optic packages. And the ones we see work best are ‘forward throw’ optics. These optic packages throw their light forwards onto the court, and not under the post. The goal is to get the center of the court lit as the edges of the court.
It’s easier to light up an indoor court. Like a gymnasium, lights can hang from the ceiling. It is easy to hit light targets from above and have the light well balanced.
What is the Cost of LED Tennis Court Lights?
Tennis lights are not expensive. And many of the lights we’ve used to light up tennis courts are affordable. We have many affordable LED UFO Light options for indoor courts and sports lighting shoebox lights for outdoor courts.
What is the Best Color Temperature for LED Tennis Court Lighting?
Our customers ask first for 5000K. 4000K is also available. Those are both great options.
How Many LED Lumens to Light a Tennis Court?
When lighting up a tennis court, we recommend that you determine the light levels you want (foot candles). Create a lighting plan to achieve those light levels. A lighting plan will give you a visual report of foot candle readings across the court. Along with the fixtures used to achieve the results and lumens per fixture.
What Beam Angle is Ideal for Tennis Court Lights?
Wide beam angles are best. Tight beam angles are good for stadium lights. But we’d only recommend that if you are lighting up the US Open stadium.
What are Common Tennis Court Fixture Mounting Methods?
For outdoor tennis court lights, they’re pole-mounted fixtures. The most common mounts are slip fitter and straight arm pole mounts.
For indoor courts, there are several ceiling mounting options available. These include an eye hook, pendant mount, and wire/chain suspended mount.
Does LED Lighting Improve Tennis Playing Experience?
The quality of light far exceeds metal halide and fluorescent lights. Without all the hassle these lights have. The light quality and light levels will last a long time. And with proper planning, you can achieve balanced lighting across the playing surface.
