Types of Commercial Light Poles

There are two basic types of poles based on mounting. One is anchor-based, and the other is direct burial. Anchor-based is a more complex solution that involves setting up a concrete base in which anchor pins are installed when the concrete is wet. Once set, these pins act as the anchor for the base plate of commercial-grade light poles.

Direct burial is the method where a hole is dug in the ground and the pole is buried in the hole. This method is used primarily for wooden poles and the outdoor light poles need to be longer to accommodate the burial depth.

We sell anchor-based poles and can provide the anchor bolts and other hardware.

What Outdoor Area Light Poles Are Made Of

There are essentially 4 types of Outdoor Area Lighting Poles:

The poles we offer are steel and wood. We can provide poles that range in height from 10 to 60+ feet. Although some of these options are not shown on this page, you should contact us if you need a specific pole height.

Other commercial tapered light pole options include fiberglass and concrete. Steel and wood are used for industrial light poles for projects such as power lines. All have their pros and cons. Fiberglass is lightweight, but not as structurally strong as steel or aluminum. Wood must be sealed, and all connections and wiring are external. Concrete has durability and strength, but is hard to move. The installation can be very expensive too. Regardless of which material you go with, choosing the right commercial light pole manufacturer can help to ensure your project is a success. There are many light pole companies out there, but not all will give you the level of support needed for complex projects. You can count on our team of specialists for that need.

You can mount outdoor stadium light fixtures or flood lights to these poles when utilized for sports projects. Make sure to request assistance from one of our pole specialists before you order to ensure you choose the right products.

Shapes of Light Poles

The two basic shapes for light poles are square or round. We offer:

  • square steel light poles
  • round steel light poles
  • round wood light poles

How Long Does it Take to Get Light Poles After Ordering?

Many light poles do come with lead times of anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks. This is because larger are custom-built for your project by one of our light pole manufacturers in the USA. That said, we do have several quick-ship light poles in heights of up to 30 feet. These typically are generally available in dark bronze but can be custom ordered with other colors if needed for your lighting project.

Heights of Commercial Lighting Poles

Light poles vary in height from 10 to as high as 70 feet.  A street light pole or a parking lot pole is typically between 15 to 30 feet high. Sports fields vary from 30 to as high as 70 feet tall. Usually, the higher the pole, the better the dispersion and balance of light. It is commonly known in the lighting industry that it is far more difficult to provide balanced lighting with short poles than taller commercial light poles.

Taller mounting heights will also reduce glare. This is important for street lights or sports fields where glare might cause athletes to lose sight of the ball. The higher you can mount the associated light fixtures, the less glare will be present.

Pay Attention to Your Location - Wind Can Play a Factor

Wind loads across the United States vary from region to region. A pole installed in Memphis will have a lower wind load than one installed in Miami. Understanding the load will determine the size of the pole, its strength, and how many lights you can install on that pole. This is known as an EPA calculation, and we can provide you with that calculation before you purchase. In many cases, a custom light pole is the best solution for your region.
