Illuminate outdoor areas, pathways, parking lots, security, arenas, and other large off-grid outdoor areas by using solar area lights. Easy installation and independently powered, Solar Area lighting save you time and money and reduce your carbon footprint with off-grid night lighting.

With LED solar area lights, you can realize even more savings when you use energy-efficient and long-lasting LED light fixtures. LED Lighting Supply is your solar-powered area light supplier’s resource for solar lighting.

How Does Solar Area Lights Work?

Using Photovoltaic (PV) panels, commercial solar area lighting gets its energy from sunlight during the day. The all in one design solar panel is mounted on top of the fixtures and they draw electrons from the sun photons that hit them. The electrons are then converted to DC power and saved in a rechargeable battery.

When the sun goes down, photocell sensors are used to change the flow of energy from the battery to the source of light. The light source is turned on automatically. After the sun rises, the light source is turned off and the process of charging the battery begins again.

What are the Advantages of Solar-Powered Area Lights?

Street area lights have several advantages over traditional on-grid outdoor lighting:

  • You can eliminate monthly electricity energy costs because these lights are not connected to a utility main.
  • Installation costs are cost-effective because there is no need for costly trenching to run wires as traditional area lighting would require.
  • Outdoor area solar lights are off the grid and not dependent on the local utilities for power. That means that outdoor areas will continue to be illuminated in the event of a power outage.
  • You can take advantage of government rebates and tax incentives that are offered in your area to save even more money on upfront costs.

What are the Disadvantages of Solar-Powered Area Light?

While solar-powered area lighting is a great lighting choice, they have some disadvantages compared to conventional outdoor grid-powered lights:

  • They require a higher up-front cost compared to standard lighting.
  • You’ll need to occasionally clean the Photovoltaic (PV) panels due to dust or moisture and snow accumulating on them. There is an elevated risk of reduced/stopped energy production if they are not kept clear.
  • Their rechargeable batteries will need to be replaced a few times during their lifetimes. This is especially true if you’re using LED fixtures because the lights will last much longer than other types of luminaires. You’ll want to account for this when considering maintenance costs.

How Long Do Solar-Powered Area Lights Last?

There are two things to consider when discussing the lifespan of solar street lighting or municipal solar area lights:

First is the lifespan of the light fixture. The lifespan of LED outdoor solar area lights will usually be in the range of 50,000 to 100,000 hours of use.

Second in the lifespan of the rechargeable battery. They will not last as long as the LED light that they are powering, so they will need to be replaced a few times before the light source reaches the end of its usefulness. On average, expect the batteries to last around four to six years.

How Bright are Solar Power Area Lights?

The brightest Solar Powered Area Light we offer is 100 Watts producing 20000 lumens. This type of light could easily replace a 400-watt metal halide fixture.

Can Solar-powered Area Lights Be Used in All Climates?

Yes, they can but it’s important to understand that they may require additional maintenance in harsh climates to keep them working properly.

Dust, rain, and snow can accumulate on horizontally mounted PV panels, and when this happens, the panels will need to be kept clear so that they can function reliably. And if you live in a cloudy area, solar-powered lighting may not be the best option.

How Much Sunlight Do Solar Area Lights Need?

Commercial solar LED area lights charge quicker with direct sunlight than with partial or full shade. As a rule of thumb, 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight will fully charge the battery and this should last for 5 to 7 days.

How Do Solar Powered Area Lights Compare to Traditional Area Lighting in Terms of Cost and Efficiency?

The PV panels and rechargeable batteries will add additional cost along with the LED light fixtures. The trade-off is that it’s offset by lesser installation costs than traditional LED lighting and zero utility charges. Otherwise, the efficiency of the light source itself will be the same.

How Much Do Solar-Powered Area Lights Cost?

There are two parts to the cost of these lights: the lighting components and the installation. Compared to traditional area lighting, solar-powered LED area lighting components are more expensive, but the installation costs are much cheaper. On average, solar-powered area lights we carry will cost between $500 and $1000 each.
