How Many Flood Lights do you need?

A good way to figure this out is to create a Flood Lighting Plan. A flood light light plan positions LED Outdoor Flood Light fixtures in a simulated space that represents your area and details lighting level (in foot candles) as well as how even and balanced the light is across the entire outdoor area.

Why should you do a flood lighting plan?

A lighting plan shows you how LED Lighting would look in your area using software. It allows us to  run different lighting options and provide you different lighting options to meet your needs.

10 Important Factors to Consider Before Converting to LED Flood Lights

1. Choose the right beam angle to get perfect lighting for flood or spot lighting applications

Flood light distribution optics come with different light distributions: symmetric and asymmetric. They have different beams to suit spot, flood, area, and specialized lighting applications.

Wide Beam

A wide flood beam for Wide floodlight beams serve general lighting purposes. They are used for wide and even lighting in big spaces. Parking lots and security lighting's are practical applications.

Medium Beam

Medium floodlight beams serve high intensity and area lighting purposes. They are used for high coverage and uniform patterned lighting in target areas.

Narrow Beam

Narrow floodlight beams serve symmetrical and confined lighting purposes. They are used for brightening the landscapes, monumental buildings, and storefronts.

Spot Beam

Spot floodlight beams serve precision and controlled lighting purposes for huge and closed spaces. They are used for tall facades, flag poles, column grazing, and accent lighting.

3. Choose The Ideal Color Temperature For Outdoor Lights

While there are many color temperatures available in the LED Spectrum, the two most common are 4000K and 5000K. 5000K lights are great alternatives to metal halides.

4000K lights will be good for areas needing a slightly warmer ambiance over LED. Converting from High Pressure Sodium?  The above two options are both better than 2200K high-pressure sodium lights.

We would advise that you avoid 2700-3500K or anything above 5500K.

4. Do you need High Voltage (277-480V)?

LED flood lights use drivers to convert AC power to DC. It the DC power the provides the energy to light up the LEDs. So simply stated, all LED drivers do is convert AC to DC.

However, voltage varies from place to place. The common ranges in North America are 100V to 480V. To accommodate this, LED Drivers typically come in these ranges:

200V-480V *

347V-480V *

277V-480V *

* High Voltage

So if you need a high voltage solution, these should be available, but you should make sure the light is equipped with a high voltage driver.

Surge protection is crucial to remember here. We have flood lights with 10-20kVA surge suppression capacity in some models. Surge suppression is an important factor that ensures the safety of the LEDs in changing weather conditions.

5. Remember - L70 Light Maintenance is long life

Lumen maintenance determines the life of any light source. Burn out is not the case with LEDs. They retain their lumen levels for longer. In reality, the light intensity goes down but that too in a long time.

The change in light intensity becomes clearly visible when the light output falls to a 70% level. However, the major impact becomes noticeable only when the light quality degradation reached 30%.

Installing a LED Lighting Supply Flood light should provide 10+ years of bright, maintenance free lighting.

6. What Is The Ideal Color Rendering Index Or CRI For Flood Lights for all purposes?

LED lights are known for their outstandingly accurate and vivid color rendition capabilities. The average range of color rendering index values for LEDs is 70-95 .

CRI or Color Rendering Index denotes the color presentation capabilities of the light sources.

The higher the CRI is, the better is the light quality and accuracy of color differentiation. The scale of CRI includes values from 1 to 100 and the comparison is done with sunlight of 100 CRI.

Our LED fixtures come with a standard CRI range of 70-85. You can request higher CRI LED lights from us.

How to decide the ideal CRI?

70 CRI proves good quality lighting  for general purpose application.

80-90 higher CRIs are better for lighting retail areas like automobile dealership stores. To note, higher CRI solutions are typically more expensive than lower CRI LEDs.

7. Lower your lighting bills and enjoy Zero Maintenance Costs with LED

Both the quality and wattage consumption of LEDs is much less than the conventional light sources like HIDs and others.

This means that you will be able to enjoy brighter light and low power bills at the same time. Most of the conventional HID lights generally use 250 to 1000 Watts. The ballast draw counts for additional 15% power.

On the other hand, the wattage consumption of LEDs is around 40-300 Watts which means 40-60% power reduction. You can save even more energy by using the lighting controls like motion sensors, photocells, etc. with the LED lights that you install.

Zero-maintenance is another quality of LED flood lights. On the other hand, traditional lights need frequent maintenance and costly handling. Even after spending enough, you will have to deal with the burnouts soon. LEDs prove better here with a life of over 10 years and no maintenance requirements.

As a bonus, our LED flood lights are eligible for high rebates due to DLC premium certification. Thus, you are not only going to save money but also earn some by going for an LED conversion for flood lights.

8. What Is The Best Lumen Efficiency Level?

Luminous efficiency is the measurement of the lumens per watt capacity of a light system. This is the real efficiency of any bulb. LEDs have higher luminous efficiency as compared to other traditional bulbs.

The efficiency ratings get even better in the high-quality LED products. The standard value for luminous efficiency is 130 lumens per watt upwards.

You can get the luminous efficiency value by dividing the lumen output value with wattages consumed value. The LED lights with higher luminous efficiency ratings perform better than the lower luminous efficiency ratings.

You will yourself observe the top efficiency ratings of LEDs after a thorough comparison of these lights with the other conventional lighting sources.

We offer LED lights with high-efficiency ratings between 130-170 lumens per watt. Let us choose the ideal efficiency for you from our different suitable light options.

The efficiency of LED Flood lights

Lights with higher efficiency ratings, like 170 lumens per watt, will be costlier than lower ones. However, the deal lies in the savings that they will give you for a longer time. Save more on power bills with high-efficiency LEDs.

9. Do You Want The Hazardous Resistant Or High-Temperature Resistant Flood Lights?

Frequently Asked Questions: LED Flood Lights

What are Flood Lights?

Flood lights are designed to illuminate large areas. They can be used indoors and outdoors in a variety of different applications. You’ll most often see flood lights in sports stadiums and parking lots, but they can also be used for other things, like landscape or gymnasium lighting. Flood lights are typically wall mounted or pole mounted fixtures designed to 'aim' light into a specific area. When flood lights provide narrow beams of light, they are called Spot Lights and Flood Lights with wide beams of light. A flood light 'floods' an area or space with light. For this reason, they are sometimes referred to as LED Area Lights. They are one of the go-to fixtures for commercial outdoor security lighting.

Commercial flood lights are available with multiple mounting options. By far the most popular are trunnion mount or yoke mount, which allows you to mount them to a flat surface, like the side of a building. Other common mounts are:

Pole mount 2 3/8" and 3"

Slipfitter Mount

Knuckle Mount

Yoke Mount

What are the Best LED Flood Lights?

The better question is - what is the best led outdoor flood light for you? What works for one space may not be the best solution for your space. The way to determine what the Best Flood Light is - create a lighting plan. Understanding your needs or requirements will allow us to choose or select the best led flood light for your application. Rebates are available - be sure to look for DLC or DLC Premium Certifications.

If you are trying to light up a specific point within a large area, a flood light with a tight optic - 10 to 30 degrees - would be your best option.

If you are trying to light up the facade of a building - a small wattage spot light would be a great lighting choice

If you are trying to provide general purpose security lighting, consider a flood light with a wide beam - 90 to 150 degrees. And for security lighting purposes, consider pairing these lights with motion sensors. A motion sensor will turn a light on when motion is detected and off when no one is around

What wattage of LED flood light fixture do I need?

Wattage is the wrong way to ask this question. You need to first understand how many foot candles you need to light your area. You then need to find a fixture that produces enough lumens to create those foot candles.

From there, you need to be thinking about light efficiency. The more efficient the light, the less wattage you need. For example, a LED Flood Light producing 20000 lumens at 100 lumens/watt draws 200 watts to make those lumens. A more efficient flood light rated at 200 lumens per watt only draws 100 watts.

So starting at wattage is a bad idea. Thinking about foot candles and light efficiency to get the right answer. The good news - the Pros at LED Lighting Supply are here to help you.

Where are Flood lights used?

Flood lights are typically found outdoors to provide lighting for large outdoor spaces. These spaces can vary - from sporting stadiums to perimeter lighting to security lighting. They are designed to focus beams of light at specific areas.  Flood lights are perfect for providing light to areas that would otherwise be dark without adding additional poles or structures. Commercial outdoor flood lights are also commonly found in parking lots, lighting up dark corners without the need for adding another pole.

It is not uncommon for Commercial LED Flood Lights to be used as Stadium Lights, and a LED Stadium Light to be used as Flood Light. They are essentially the same.

Can Commercial LED Flood Lights replace Metal Halide Flood lights?

Yes. We have many options, wattages and lumen packages. We can easily replace 250W metal halide,  400W metal halide and 1000W Metal Halide flood lights with LED. Energy savings and maintenance savings drop dramatically when you convert to LED Flood lights, and paybacks are relatively quick. LED Flood lights have higher lumen counts that are perfect for powerful flood and led security light purposes. Our rugged, tough industrial lighting fixtures  can be used in large areas like ports, ship yards and train yards.
