What are LED Canopy Lights?

LED Canopy Lights are commercial outdoor light fixtures found over covered areas and outdoor spaces. They are also found in above-ground and below-ground parking areas and other commercial and professional settings, like car washes, loading areas, drive-throughs, home garage areas, and many other outdoor applications. Canopy lights can work with motion sensors. If the canopy light includes a dimmable driver, then they can dim when cars and people have vacated the area. And when motion’s detected, they turn back on to full power.

Some canopy lights are wet location rated, having an IP rating of IP65 or higher. Another common rating is “Suitable for damp locations”. This is not a true waterproof IP Rating.

They are ceiling-mounted outdoor lights. Since the mounting heights are lower, they tend to have very wide beam angles. This ensures the light can reach as much area as possible. The most common color temperature used with canopies is 5000K. 4000K and 3000K. Some of the canopy lights we offer are color-selectable and wattage-selectable.

Like many LED Lighting fixtures, these lights excel in reliable performance, high lumen output, energy savings, and energy efficiency with lower energy consumption when compared to lesser energy-efficient HID light sources.

Benefits of Using LED Canopy Lights

Many LED canopy lights offer the same benefits as fluorescent or metal halide.

  • They will reduce lighting bills when compared to metal halide, high-pressure sodium, and halogen canopy lights
  • They work well with dimmers and motion sensors. LED canopy lights can dim when there is no activity in the area.
  • Will provide bright maintenance-free lighting keeping areas lit by them feel safe and inviting
  • Will require little, if any, maintenance

Best Applications for LED Canopy Lights

  • workshops and shop garages
  • low-ceiling workshops
  • gas station canopies
  • underground car parking garages.
  • above-ground parking facilities.

Different Types of LED Canopy Lights

There are two main types of LED Canopy Lights: recessed-mounted and surface-mounted. Out of the two types, surface mount is more common to see in commercial settings. Many of the canopies we offer can also be pendant mounted.

  • Recessed mounts are installed in pre-made inserts inside overhead canopies. These are very common at your local gas station.
  • Surface mount, or ceiling surface mount, is mounted directly to the ceiling surface.

Why Upgrade Your Canopy Lighting for Parking Garages to LED?

There are many reasons to upgrade your existing canopy lighting. The most obvious ones are reducing your lighting bill and maintenance. They are also a high-quality safe lighting source for making dark areas far more inviting for customers and employees. They will also never hum or flicker as tired fluorescent lights and ballast do.

Choosing Between an LED Canopy and an LED UFO Fixture

There are some significant differences between these fixtures. First, you have to understand the usage and application of the fixture. If the ceiling heights are short, < 12 feet, a UFO fixture’s beam angle might not be able to cast a wide enough beam pattern.

For security and vandal reasons, UFO fixtures are not ceiling-mounted like canopy lights.

Choosing between an LED Canopy and an LED Vapor Proof Fixture

Vapor-proof fixtures make great replacements for fluorescent-style canopy lights. You see these lights in above-ground and below-ground parking spaces. Unlike UFOs, you could choose a vapor-tight fixture or a canopy light and get great results from either light.

Installing LED Canopy Lights

Canopy lights mount to a ceiling surface, making them a great replacement option. The installation of canopy lights is quick and easy. It’s no more difficult than installing a metal halide or fluorescent fixture. For a qualified electrician, all mounting hardware is included. The wiring is simple, there are only three wires to connect, line, neutral, and ground.

Pendant Mounted Canopy Lights

Some canopy lights we offer also have a pendant mount option if that is what you need. Contact one of our lighting experts. We can walk you through the process of selecting the right light for your requirements.
