What are LED Vapor Tight Light Fixtures?
Vapor-proof LED fixtures are a sealed lighting system. It’s designed for installation in a corrosive or damp/wet non-explosive environment. They’re used in locations where there’s a risk of water vapor, steam, or other types of (harmful/corrosive) vapor entering the lighting fixture. This moisture and vapor would degrade the lighting components of the fixture – and possibly shorten the lifespan of the fixture.
Many of the vapor proof lighting found on this page is IP rated for wet locations. That means they can also be mounted outdoors in wet conditions.
If you need vapor-proof fixtures with motion sensors, we have some lighting options that can come with a motion sensor. Motion detectors sense motion and will cause the light to go to full brightness and will dim automatically after a period of time when the area is void of motion.
You will typically find these lights in parking garages, food processing plants, car washes, and other wet environments. These are wet locations, and dust-tight lighting designed to withstand harsh conditions while providing reliable light output, saving energy, and reducing maintenance costs.
Mounting an LED vapor proof fixture is easy. Most are either ceiling-mounted or wire / suspended-mounted. The instructions we provide with each light make it easy to install them. Any qualified electrician could handle the installation.
Are Vapor Tight Lights Explosion Proof Rated?
No. A vapor-tight design keeps non-explosive gases and dust from entering the fixture. This might cause premature failure of the fixture. It is not designed to be an explosion-proof fixture. Never use vapor-proof light fixtures to replace explosion-rated fixtures.
What are the Benefits of Using LED Vapor Proof Fixtures?
- energy efficient light source that will reduce your utility bills by 50% or greater when compared to metal halide, halogen, and fluorescent lighting
- low maintenance as there are no bulbs or ballasts to replace
- dependable with a very long service life so your spaces will be brighter and safer for employees, customers, and patrons
How Many Vapor-Proof Lights Do I Need?
Every application and space is different. We recommend you start by creating a lighting plan.
- Tell us how many foot candles you need.
- The purpose of the space
- The size of the space, and the ceiling height.
From there, we can create a lighting plan. This plan will show you
- what’s the best light to use
- how many lights do you need
- where they’re located in your space
- the distance between fixtures
The lighting plan will show you the average foot candles. It will also calculate how balanced / even the light is (represented as average/min ratio).
Here are some general quick guidelines that will help you understand what you might need. Please note, that the higher the ceiling, the more powerful light you will need. Or if the area is void of natural light, with non-reflective walls, you might need to add more lights or more powerful lights.
- 8-12 feet: 50-100 watts LED: 10,000-15,000 lumens
- 12-20 feet: 100-150 watts LED: 15,000-22,500 lumens
Recommended fixture spacing for almost all LED fixtures is as follows. Please note that these are only general guidelines.
- 8 feet ceiling height: 8-10 feet apart
- 10 feet ceiling height: 10-12 feet apart
- 15 feet ceiling height: 15-18 feet apart
How to Select LED Vapor Proof Lighting Fixtures
Here’s a general rule for replacing old Metal Halide / Fluorescent fixtures:
- 150 Watts HID – choose an LED fixture producing 5,000 to 10,000 lumens.
- 250 Watts HID – choose an LED fixture producing 10,000 to 15,000 lumens.
- 400 Watts HID – choose an LED fixture producing 15,000 to 30,000 lumens.
You can determine the specific output by understanding the following factors:
- What is the current wattage of your existing fixtures?
- How many fixtures are there? Or is this a new install?
- How high are the fixtures mounted?
- What is the space used for? (to help determine the amount of light required)
Choose a style:
- Single Standalone Vapor Tight Fixtures: these linear fixtures replace single-unit fluorescent fixtures
- Linkable Vapor Proof LED Fixtures: single fixtures that can link together to create one single long string of lights
You should also consider:
- Voltage: 120V or 100-277V
- Mounting: Conduit, Ceiling Mount, or Wire / Cable Suspension
- Motion Sensor: Dim the lights when the area is void of movement
- Color Temperature: 4000K or 5000K
- Configurable: wattage/color changeable or static color/wattage
A few more things to consider before your purchase:
- Find a supplier that understands your requirements. They can provide professional recommendations based on your needs.
- You like how the product looks. There are many options available.
- The product has a 5+ years warranty. And who do you call if you need warranty support? We handle all warranty claims for our products.
For new installations or areas with existing lights, we recommend making a lighting plan. A lighting plan will help choose the right vapor-proof lighting option. Scroll to the bottom of this page to request yours!
