Benefits of Using LED Paint Booth Lights

There are many benefits, but here are the top reasons you should consider using LED spray painting lights:
  1. They are energy efficient and will lower your lighting bills with energy savings when compared to Metal Halide and fluorescent fixtures.
  2. They have a longer lifespan – which means less maintenance and replacement of bulbs and ballasts. Many of our products will last 10 + years when used as much as 12 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  3. They produce significantly less heat versus traditional Metal Halide (HID) lighting.
  4. They provide consistent lighting and don’t strobe as fluorescent lighting does.

Choosing the Right LED Paint Booth Lighting

The most important first step is to understand what type of spraying you’re doing. If your spray booth process creates explosive paint vapors, then you should use explosive-proof lighting. Do not substitute vapor-proof lighting for explosion-proof light (we discuss this further below). From there, it’s a function of understanding the factors of your spray booth: size, brightness, and application, and whether you want to replace your existing fixtures or retrofit your fixtures.

Best LED Lights for a Paint Booth

Let’s make sure we are specific about the type of material used in a paint booth. For the most part, the dangerous paints are oil-based or alcohol-based. Water-based paints are not a concern. Are hazardous paints or finishes being applied in a booth? Then you have to use explosion-rated or hazardous location-rated spray painting lights. The best way to determine this is to check with your local permitting office or fire inspector.

Using Vapor-Proof Lights in a Paint Booth

Vapor-proof light fixture keeps the outside environment from entering into the fixture. This gas or vapor could shorten the life of the fixture. Never use it in place of an explosion-proof light. In the case of non-explosive water-born vapors, then you could use a vapor-proof fixture. We recommend you contact your local city, town, or county engineering office first. The industry standard for a paint booth is between 100 to 150-foot candles at 3 feet height above floor level. Classifications of Lighting Needed for LED Paint Booth Lights

To answer this, we recommend you ask your city, county, or town fire department. There is one safe answer though. Class 1 Division 1 Lighting (C1D1) is meant for the harshest of explosive environments. It is a safer option than Class 1 Division 2 lights (C1D2),

Difference Between Class 1 Division 1 and Class 1 Division 2 in Paint Booth Lighting?

  • C1D1 is a category of lights where an explosive environment is always present.
  • C1D2 is a category of lights where an explosive environment is sometimes present.
A word of caution – don’t assume that C1D2 applies because the paint booth is not used ‘all the time’. When in use, the conditions of C1D1 exist, and that should be the way you approach this decision

Intrinsically Safe LED Paint Shop Lighting

Intrinsically safe lights are typically very small battery-powered lights, like flashlights. Both intrinsically safe lights and explosion-proof lights are designed to meet one common goal – to not create an explosion from a failure inside the light to escape to the dangerous environment they operate in. Powerful intrinsically safe lights are very expensive, so explosion-proof rated lighting is a better cost-effective option.

Keeping Paint off Light Fixtures in a Spray Booth

If paint gets on the body of the fixture, it will have no effect. If it gets on the lens, it will reduce the amount of light. If this happens, since the lens has tempered glass, you can scrape the paint off when it does happen.

Yes, but first make sure you are not violating any code requirements set by your local government. Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED magnetic strips is a common retrofit option.

You should always ask your city, town, or county fire departments for their guidelines. If you’re 100% certain the water-based paints and finishes will never cause an explosion, then you won’t need them.

Do I Need Anything Else for an Installation?

We supply the fixtures only. Are you replacing an existing fixture? You might already have the proper conduit and junction boxes to install the new units. Are you changing your fixture style or it is a new installation? You will need to get that material or confirm that what you have will work for your installation.
