What are LED Panel Lights?

LED light panels are commercial lights designed to be installed inside a dropped ceiling grid system. These panels are designed as a replacement for fluorescent panels and troffers. They can also be mounted directly to a ceiling. They have an extremely low profile and are well-suited for low-ceiling applications. The three most common sizes for LED Panel lights are:

What Are The Benefits of Using LED Panel Lights versus Fluorescent Troffers?

There are many differences between LED panel lights and fluorescent fixtures. Here are what we believe are the major differences between them:

  • Energy savings: You should expect upwards of 50% reduced energy costs when using LED panels over fluorescent linear lighting.
  • Lighting Quality: LEDs are high CRI Light sources providing years of high-quality lighting and superior light distribution
  • Lower Maintenance Costs: LED Lights are designed to run for many years with the need for bulb, tube, or ballast replacement like fluorescent troffers.
  • No strobing or humming: Fluorescent lights will strobe near the end of life.  This strobing can cause eye strain and headaches. Fluorescent ballasts hum, and this becomes quite loud near the end of the ballast’s life. With LED Lighting, no strobing or humming.
  • LEDs are Instant On and Instant Off: Fluorescents are also quick, but take some time to warm up. This becomes a lot longer if the room they are installed in is cold.
  • Works well with motion sensors. LED Linear Fixtures turn on and off quickly – and dim – so they work well with these energy savings controls. You need special ballasts to do this with fluorescent lighting.
  • Recycling: With LED Technology, there are no expensive recycling processes because LEDs do not contain mercury or other harmful substances.

What are the Best Applications for LED Panels and Troffers?

These LED panels and troffers are great for many commercial indoor spaces. We have customers who purchased these LED Fixtures for:

What Style of LED Panel Light Is Best for You?

1 X 4 LED Flat Panel  Measuring 1 foot X 4 feet, these panels are the narrowest of all LED panels we offer.
2 X 2 LED Flat Panel Measuring 2 feet X 2 feet, these panels are the second most popular size of LED panels we offer.
2 X 4 LED Flat Panel Measuring 2 feet X 4 feet, these panels are the most popular size LED panel we offer.
LED Troffer Available in 2 feet X 2 feet and 2 feet X 4 feet, these troffers offer architectural style indirect lighting.
Backlit LED Panels These panels are designed with a frosted diffuser with the LEDs mounted at the back of the panel. This has become the most common panel offered today.
Edge-lit LED Panels These panels are designed with a frosted diffuser with the LEDs mounted at the edge of the panel pointing inwards. This was the most popular panel offered but it's more common to see backlit panels.
Wattage Adjustable LED Panels These LED Panels have onboard toggle switches that allow you to choose the wattage and lumen output. This allows you to customize the LED light output to meet your needs on location.
Color Adjustable LED Panels These panels have onboard toggle switches that allow you to choose the color temperature. Typical options are between 3000K and 5000K.
LED Panels with Emergency Backup These panels have onboard EMB packs that can provide up to 90 minutes of light when the power supply is interrupted.

How to Install LED Panel Lights

They drop into a drop ceiling grid, and all you have to do is wire them to your power circuit.

Some models have safety clips. This makes them safe for installation in earthquake-prone areas.

These panels are simple to wire. There are only three wires to hook up – line, neutral, and ground. Any qualified electrician can install them.

How to Install a Battery Backup on an LED Panel

Some of our panels have battery backups as an option. If you order these panels with the battery backup, they are already installed. There is nothing you can do other than wire the panels to the circuit. Make sure you follow the supplied instructions.

LED Flat Panels and LED Troffers FAQ

What are LED Panel Lights?

LED light panels are commercial lights designed to be installed inside a dropped ceiling grid system. These panels are designed as a replacement for fluorescent panels and troffers. They can also be mounted directly to a ceiling. They have an extremely low profile and are well-suited for low-ceiling applications.

What's the Best Process to Select a Flat LED Panel?

The process starts by asking to create a lighting plan after indicating how bright you want the space to be. Our lighting plan software will allow us to switch out different panels and troffers. We can set the spacing until we meet the desired light levels.

What Mounting Options are Available with Your LED Panel Lights?

There are three methods.

  • You can drop them into the existing grid of a drop ceiling.
  • You can suspend them from the ceiling with hanging wire.
  • They can be ceiling mounted using a ceiling mount frame.

Are Your LED Panel Lights Dimmable?

Some panels come with a dimmable 0-10V driver and a 1-10V driver. Some of our panels are dimmable using a supplied remote control. Others can connect in series using low-voltage wire and a wall-mounted 0-10V dimmer switch.

Do LED Panels Come With a Remote Control?

Some LED Panels have a remote option. For example, our color and wattage changing panels are configurable using the remote control.

What’s the Difference Between Backlit LED Panels and Edge Lit LED Panels?

For the most part, the panels are the same. The difference lies in where the LEDs are installed inside the panel. Backlit LED panels have the LEDs installed on the very back of the fixture with the light projecting towards the diffused lens. Edge-lit LED panels have the LEDs installed in the edge (frame) with the LEDs pointing horizontally inwards into the diffuser.

What's the Difference Between LED Flat Panels and LED Tube Lights?

A tube light is designed to be a retrofit option. In retrofitting, you would replace the fluorescent tubes inside the existing fixture with LED tubes. Depending on the type of tube, you might be able to use the existing fluorescent ballast, or you would have to wire "around" the ballast and directly wire the AC power to the end tombstones. An LED Panel is a whole fixture replacement of the fluorescent fixture. LED Panels do not contain tubes but use LED strips inside the flat panel.

What's the Difference between LED Troffers and LED Light Panels?

Both panels and LED Troffers are the same sizes and come in 2 feet x 2 feet and 2 feet x 4 feet. The main difference is that LED Panels have a flat panel surface and the main portion of the light is a diffuser from which the light is produced.  Troffers are fixtures with an architectural design and the light is emitted indirectly and reflected using the troffer body.

Which style of fixture is better? Troffers offer an indirect light source and are more of an architecturally styled fixture. Panels are more direct-lit, and provide extra brightness with the light being visible on the face of the fixture. Panels are a little brighter and provide extra light. It comes down to personal choice as both should provide perfect lighting.
