General
What are High Bay LED Lights?
High Bay LED Lights are a type of ceiling-mounted LED lighting fixture. These lights are commonly used in large indoor facilities, like warehouses, distribution centers, factories, gymnasiums, and manufacturing facilities.
They are called “high bays” because these fixtures are typically mounted at heights of 20 feet or more above the floor.
These lamps pack enough power to illuminate large areas while helping you stay in control of your electrical costs. The two most common types of LED High Bay Lights are:
UFO High Bays – a great replacement for a Metal Halides High Bay
Linear High Bay Lights – a replacement for fluorescent high baysHow to Choose the Best High Bay LED Lighting for your Application?
Here’s a general rule for replacing High Bay Light Metal Halide / HID fixtures:
400 Watts – choose LED High Bay Lights producing 15,000 to 30,000 lumens.
1000 Watts – choose LED High Bay Lights producing 40,000 to 60,000 lumens. You can determine the specific output by understanding the following important factor:
- What is the current wattage?
- How many High Bay Lights are there?
- How high are the high bay lights mounted?
- What is the space used for? (To help determine the amount of light required)
Choose a style:
- UFO LED Lights – round LED High Bay Lights are perfect to replace Metal Halide / HID high bay light fixtures
- LED Linear Panels – panel style LED High Bay Lights are a great replacement for fluorescent / T5 fixtures.
You should also consider:
Voltage: 100-277V or 277-480V.
Mounting: Eye Hook, Pendant Mount, Ceiling Mount, or Wire/Cable Suspension
Motion Sensor: Dim the lights when the room is empty.
Color Temperature: 4000K or 5000K
Beam Angle: 120 degrees standard, 90 or 60 degrees for higher ceilingsA few more things to consider before your LED High Bay Lighting purchase:
Look for good product reviews and make sure the company is reputable.
Find a vendor that understands your requirements. They can provide professional recommendations based on your needs.
You like how the high bay lights look.
The LED High Bay Lights has a 5+ year warranty. And who do you call if you need warranty support? We handle all warranty claims for our products. For new installations or if you need guidance, then we recommend making a lighting plan. A lighting plan will help choose the right option.
How efficient are LED High Bay Lights?
There are two answers to this question.
- When compared to other light sources, like Metal Halide, Fluorescent, and High-Pressure Sodium Lighting, they are very efficient.
- Among LED Lights themselves, it depends on the “Lumens Per Watt”. Efficiency in LED Lighting is based on how many lumens can be created using 1 watt of energy. Our most efficient High Bays are rated at 200 lumens/watt.
How much maintenance do LED High Bays require?
Theoretically none. They are not like HID light sources that need bulb and ballast replacements. However, if the LED Lights are installed in environments that are dusty and dirty, cleaning them off with compressed air will help the heat sinks work effectively.
Even with consistent use, our top-quality linear high bay lights and UFOs don’t require regular maintenance or replacement. This makes them the ideal choice because when you install high-bay LED lighting, you’ll have cost-effective solutions that will last for years to come.
What’s the best color temperature for LED high bay lights?
Based on selling high bays and low bays for the past 10+ years, the most popular color temperatures are 5000K and 4000K. Fortunately, we have high bays where you can change the color temperature in the field. These high bays allow you to decide which is the best color temperature for your location.
Do High Bay LED Lights require special maintenance?
Not at all – but there are a few exceptions. If your area is dusty and the dust can reach the lights, you should clean the exterior of the lights (frequency depends on the amount of dust). Coating the exterior will only make the heat sink less efficient and could lessen the lifespan of the fixture.
Can High Bay LED lights be used in all climates?
Yes. But let’s be practical. A LED High Bay Light are designed for indoor applications. So climate should not matter. A LED High Bay Light does operate well in cold weather, and to an extent, in warm/hot weather (for extreme heat, we suggest looking at our high-temperature high bay light fixtures).
Our UFO Lights are “waterproof” (IP rated). So, rain and water (or even snow) should not matter. IP-rated High Bays can be safely used outdoors, if that’s your application.
Do High Bay LED Lights emit harmful UV radiation?
No, High Bay LED Lights do not emit significant (if any) amounts of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Unlike traditional lighting sources like metal halide or fluorescent lights, LED Light Fixtures produce very small amounts of UV radiation, if any.
LED technology is inherently low in UV emissions, making High Bay LED Lighting a safe option for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Additionally, LED lights do not contain mercury, unlike fluorescent lights, further eliminating potential environmental hazards.
What are Your Most Popular LED High Bays you sell?
Our family of HBC White UFO Round Lights is popular. They are available in lower wattage 100W and 120W and higher 150W and 200W models. These high bay LED light units are a high-quality (CRI) light source. High CRI is responsible for superior color rendering of objects and things.
These fixtures are well-built, reliable, and priced right for our customers.
Are there High Bay Fixtures that can handle High Temperatures?

What Round High Bays Do You Recommend?
We would recommend these LED High Bay Lights to replace Metal Halide and High-Pressure Sodium fixtures:
- HBC 150-Watt 5000K is a perfect 400-Watt MH Replacement
- 240-Watt HBHO High-Bay is designed to replace 1000 Watts
- 300-Watt Industrial Fixture is great when you want light levels to exceed 1000 Watts. It’s available in both standard (100-277V) or High Voltage (277-480V) options.
- 150-Watt High Bay – Industrial Grade. 100-277V
How Energy Efficient are LED High Bay Lighting Fixtures? How much energy can you expect to save over traditional (HID) lights?
Extremely efficient, when comparing LED to traditional HID High Bay Lighting fixtures. Energy consumption is 50 to 75% lower, and even more when using motion sensors. This will be directly reflected on your utility bill for lights as they will use less energy than older styles like Metal Halide and HID lights.
What’s the difference between LED high bays and traditional (HID and fluorescent) high bay lights?
There are many differences. Here are five based on our 10+ years of experience.
- Energy savings: you should expect upwards of 50% reduced costs over traditional lighting. There are additional savings when controls are used.
- Less maintenance: HID (Metal Halide) bulbs need replacing at around 15,000 hours. At 1/2 life, they have lost 1/2 of their lumens.
- Instant On and Instant Off. No long start-up/strike times using LED.
- Works well with motion sensors. They can turn on and off quickly – and dim – so they work well with these energy savings controls
- Dimming: Some LEDs (not all) can dim. In warehouses, this means you can dim the lights when the space is empty. Works perfectly with dimming motion sensors.
What are the Energy savings and cost savings associated with High Bay LED Lights over traditional light sources?
In terms of energy savings, you can expect at least 50% energy savings when you switch to LED Lights. If you add a motion sensor that dims when the area is void of activity, savings can dramatically improve.
The more efficient the LED Light is (lumens per watt), this will translate into less energy costs and higher savings.
A 100-Watt LED fixture @ 200 lumens per watt produces 20000 lumens.
A 200-Watt LED fixture @ 100 lumens per watt produces 20000 lumens.
The energy efficiency (savings) of the first fixture is much better than the second fixture. And both are better than the 400-Watt Metal Halide fixture it’s designed to replace.
In terms of maintenance costs and savings, most of our customers who operate commercial buildings have told us LED lights are almost maintenance-free. For those facilities that are all too familiar with replacing bulbs and ballasts, converting to LED will free up a lot of electricians’ time currently spent on maintaining lights.
What are the benefits of using motion sensors with High Bay LED Lights?
Using motion sensors with High Bay LED Lights offers several benefits. Motion sensors can detect the presence or absence of people in a space and adjust the lighting accordingly. When an area is unoccupied, the motion sensor can automatically dim or turn off the lights, resulting in significant energy savings.
This feature is particularly useful in areas with intermittent occupancy, such as storage rooms or corridors. By incorporating motion sensors, you not only reduce energy consumption but also extend the lifespan of your LED High Bay Lights by minimizing unnecessary operation.
It’s important to make sure the high bay you want to add motion sensors to is dimmable and motion sensor compatible. Some are, but not all.
Are High Bay LED Lights compatible with emergency backup systems?
Yes, LED High Bays can be integrated with emergency backup systems to ensure lighting functionality during power outages or emergencies. Emergency backup systems, such as battery backup or generator systems, provide backup power to designated emergency lighting circuits.
By connecting High Bay LED Lights to these systems, you can maintain essential lighting in critical areas, such as exit routes, stairwells, and safety zones.
It is important to select High Bay LED Lights that are compatible with the specific emergency backup system you intend to use and ensure compliance with local safety regulations and codes.
BEFORE YOU BUY
How Many LED High Bays Do I Need?
Converting your lights from metal-halide or fluorescent? There is a high probability we can do a 1-for-1 replacement to a high bay LED light. For new lighting layouts, it’s important to go through the following steps:
1. How many foot candles do you want on the ground?
2. What is the physical space of the area?
3. Are there any obstructions? From there, we can create a lighting plan that will model this area. This plan will tell you:
how many lights you need
where they’re located
the optimal distance between fixturesThe lighting plan will show you the average, min, and max foot-candle readings in the space. This is an indication of whether the selected light is capable of providing sufficient light. It will show you how balanced the light is (look for a low average/min ratio).
Here are some general guidelines that will help you do some quick calculations. Please note, the higher the ceiling, the more powerful light you will need. For ceilings ranging from 15 to 40+ feet, use the following guide to choose the proper lumen output:
15-20 feet: 100-150 watts LED: 15,000 – 22,500 lumens
20-30 feet: 120-200 watts LED: 18,000 – 30,000 lumens
31-40 feet: 240-300 watts LED: 40,800 – 45,000 lumens
40+ feet: 400-600 watts LED: 72,000 – 96,000 lumensRecommended fixture spacing for LED high bays is as follows. Please note, these are general guidelines. They do not take into account how bright you want the space to be. If you need brighter, you can add brighter lights or make the spacing between fixtures closer.
10 feet ceiling height: 10-12 feet apart
20 feet ceiling height: 20-22 feet apart
30 feet ceiling height: 30-33 feet apart
40 feet ceiling height: 40-44 feet apartTypically speaking, when your ceilings are below 15 feet, consider using low bay lights. Low Bay Lights are less powerful versions of high bay lights. For higher ceiling applications above 20 feet, High Bays are the best choice. High bay fixtures and low bay lights are essentially the same types of LED Bay Lights fixtures.
What is the lifespan of LED High Bay Lights?
There are two components of High Bays that have different lifespans. The first is the LEDs. Today, higher-quality High Bay LEDs can last 100,000+ hours. Typically, you do not replace LEDs if they fail.
The second is the LED Driver. Higher-quality LED Fixtures use better-quality LED Drivers. The drivers used in our fixtures are rated for 50,000 to 70,000 hours. At end of its life, you can replace an LED Driver and extend the life of the high bay fixture.
These numbers vary by quality. You can generally gauge the quality of components used by the cost of the product. Many ‘cheap(er)’ LED High Bays use lesser-quality chip sets and drivers.
What’s the recommended mounting height for High Bay Lights?
Any ceiling with a height of 20 feet or higher is perfect for these fixtures. One thing to consider – for high ceilings (> 30 feet), you might need a more powerful high bay or consider using a tighter beam angle (60 or 90 degrees) for optimum light distribution. Ensuring proper and balanced light distribution is key to a successful lighting installation.
You want to be careful with high-ceiling applications. If you use too wide of a beam angle, a lot of the light will be converted to lighting up the walls and not the floor and work area below, and this is not what you want the light distribution to be.
What Mounting options are available for LED High Bay Lights?
For UFO LED Lights, we offer hook mounts and pendant mounts utilizing a conduit pipe connected to a junction box.
For linear high bays, wire/cable mounts that attach to the corners of the unit are common mounts, as well as pendant mounts from the center of the fixture.
Where are LED High Bay Lights Used?
These are rugged Industrial-Grade and Commercial-Rated Light fixtures. So, you will find them used in:
Warehouses
Manufacturing Plants
Factories
Auditoriums
Auto Body Shops
Car WashesGymnasiums
Workshop Lighting
Indoor Sports Facilities
Food Processing Plants
Retail Stores
parking garagesAre Your High Bay Fixtures Rated for Wet Locations?
Some are. You need an LED high bay light that is UL Wet Location rated and has an IP rating. IP Ratings start at IP65 and go to IP69K. The higher the number, the better it is in wet conditions. (The second digit in the IP rating is the one you care about – it’s the protection from water intrusion).
Do You Sell LED High Bay Shop Lights?
Yes, we offer many commercial high bay LED lights that you can use inside a workshop or inside a commercial space. The most important criterion is to pick the right light and the right number of lights to get the foot candles to where you need them and the light balance perfect so there are no shadows.
Do you have High Voltage High Bays?
We do. The standard driver that comes with all our LED High Bays is 100-277V. These are automatic switching drivers that detect the incoming voltage and automatically set it to that voltage.
On some models, we offer high-voltage options. The two most common high-voltage options are 347-480V and 277-480V. These drivers are also self-adjusting to the incoming voltage.
How can you reduce glare with LED High Bay Lights?
There are two main options we provide to reduce glare.
The most common option we offer is a frosted lens. Frosted lenses diffuse the bright light generated from LED Diodes. It’s similar to how a frosted fluorescent tube looks.
The second option we offer on some models is a ribbed lens. The ribs are designed to “hide” the LEDS, making them less visible and less likely to produce glare. Check the UGR rating of a fixture to determine how well it reduces glare.
We have installed these options in many gymnasiums with great results.
Do your High Bay Lights Come with a Plug?
Most of the fixtures you see on this page come with a bare whip/power cord ranging from 4 feet to 6 feet. We do not supply a plug. Lighting requirements can vary from installation to installation.
Most industrial applications wiring go into a J-box and do not need a plug. If a plug is needed, we can quote it.
Do You Offer Dimmable LED High Bay Lights?
Yes, many of the LED Fixtures you see on this page are dimmable. On the specification of each light, we identify if the fixture is dimmable.
They are all 1-10V dimmable and controlled by 2 low voltage dimming wires. Some of our dimmable LED Fixtures are designed to work with a motion sensor only,

Wiring an LED High Bay Lighting fixture is pretty simple. There are 3 main wires that the high bay uses: Line, Neutral, and Ground.
Sometimes there are two low-voltage dimming wires that allow you to dim light levels with a 1-10V dimmer. If you need to dim, make sure the fixture is dimmable and comes with low-voltage dimming wires.
We recommend hiring a licensed electrician for any high bay installation.
